Another Lincoln quote

Lincoln came into the bathroom this morning while I was showering and proceeded to do his business. All of a sudden he pipes up with, "Well, I'm mostly a big boy, but sometimes I still put my underwear on backwards."

It made me think--I'm mostly a big girl, but I still...
...get annoyed at little things
...slam doors when I'm really mad
...can't stand sudden changes
...say things that I know I shouldn't
...get impatient with children acting their ages
...and the list goes on...

BUT--Lincoln won't put his underwear on backwards for his entire life...in fact, it's only rarely that he still does--and it doesn't bring him down that he slips up sometimes. There is hope for me, too! I'll just make the goal of being better today than I was yesterday, and take it one day at a time, remembering to look behind me and see how far I've come.

On our way to a baptism!

Lincoln

Every so often I have the chance to have some one-on-one time with Lincoln. Last week we dropped Elise off at ballet and were driving home when he asked me "Who is my name from?"

It took me a second to grasp what he was asking me, then remembered that in family scripture study we recently read Helaman 5:6-7, where it talks about how Helaman gave his sons specific names so that they would remember to act like those they were named for. We went through each of the kids' names and talked about why their names were special. On this particular day, Lincoln was thinking about that but couldn't remember who he was named for.

I told him his first name was from Abraham Lincoln and his middle name, Xavier, was Mormor's daddy. I reminded him of some of the fun stories--how he used to be a sheep herder in the mountains of Utah and how Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid would bring him supplies...how he owned a butcher shop and once had bananas--a new and exotic fruit--and how a man came in and bought 2 bananas and proceeded to eat them both on the spot--he asked for paper to wrap the peels in so he could "show his wife what a banana looked like"--grandpa refused.

One story led to another, and soon I told Lincoln about how "Zave" was married and had 10 kids before he married Mormor's mom. His first wife died after caring for a son with Typhoid, and soon after Zave married my great-grandma. For some reason, Lincoln was very intrigued by this story and asked some follow-up questions:

"What did her die of?" And after a brief moment of thought, "Oh, I know! I think her was eaten by a dragon."

He quickly hedged that thought with, "Well, maybe her just died because her was so old."

***

Lincoln with his good buddy Elder Schmidt, weeding on the side of the house, and then with Elder Thompson, playing soccer on the 4th of July. Lincoln sure loves these two missionaries!

Being silly at ballet and learning to ride a bike--thank goodness for awesome older brothers!

My friends

Twice a month some of my friends and I get together and talk while our daughters have their book club and our boys play outside or code. We didn't get a picture with everybody, but aren't we a nice looking bunch?

And here are some of the girls...

And here is the real us. :)

It is incredible to get together with like-minded women who are devoted to both their own and their children's education. Our kids are at similar stages (ages in-utero - 13 years) and we can talk all about things that are happening and be confident of good advice. And our kids love each other dearly--if I were to handpick a group of kids for my kids to be friends with, I would choose these families!

Sheriff's Open House

Kind of boring, but the kids like the pictures, so this one is for them! :)

The helicopter was the highlight for the littlest boys! Trevor is talking about it still--months later! But he calls it a "hep-ih-cocker" or something like that.

And the very best picture of all! This SWAT team was pretty impressed with my dancer! :)
