Sammy

Our Sammy-G (Samuel Gene when he is in trouble) turned 5 in March, and he is all boy. Climbing walls, hitting & kicking balls, picking up bugs...in fact, he is my designated bug killer when bugs are inside. He is my boy who requests a math page every day so he can be sure his reading, writing and math are completed. He makes his bed and gets his clothes on (and pjs in the laundry) every morning before coming out of his room, and is always the one to remember to ask, "What else can I do?" and give me extra hugs, "Because the prophet said to, and I follow the prophet!"

He loves books and being read to, and will listen to stories as long as Elise, Mason or I can talk. He's always asking one of us to go outside and play catch or soccer. He is never demanding, and always quietly patient--which sometimes leads to me forgetting that he asked me to do something for him.

He loves playing with Lincoln, and also loves pretending.

He has a sweet cape (that I made--so obviously, very cool) and light saber, and he goes around saving people. Notice the belt on his athletic pants? It is there to hold his saber. He also has a killer cowboy outfit--vest, bandana, hat and boots, and rides the range with the best of the best. His imagination is fantastic.

He doesn't have scary dreams very often any more, but his room is closest to our room, so he'll still come in sometimes. When he does, he just stands quietly at my bedside, waiting patiently for me to wake up. It usually freaks me out when I discover him quietly waiting for me to notice him. Usually he isn't frightened enough for me to let him in my bed, and he'll sleep on the perma-bed on the floor next to my bed.

He's always been a good sleeper. He was the fastest to sleep through the night, and aside from the scary dreams, can sleep through anything. There is a reason he and Lincoln share a room! He's usually asleep by 8:30pm and gets up around 8am. I put him to bed on my bed at bedtime, so that he can look at books without disturbing Lincoln, and even with a pillow fortress around him, he still manages to fall off my bed frequently. He did the other night right after I took this picture (his feet are on the pillow fortress, his head at the foot of the bed):

He's not very good at staying in one place once he is asleep. Fortunately we have a little bed tent on his very cool Ikea bed that keeps him from falling off of it!

Sammy has the most gorgeous hair EVER. I trim it, but keep it long. We'll see if he gets his summer cut this year...

We love our Sammy-boy!

Lincoln

For over a month I've been wanting to write an entry about each of my kids. With Sammy and Mason's recent birthdays, Elise's ballet and Lincoln being way too cute, I just need to write!

Lincoln Xavier. 17 months old, 21 1/2 lbs, and a red curly-haired, blue-eyed wrestling ball of fun! Our tiny man loveslovesloves to be outside--playing with balls, chasing the big kids, riding his tricycle, swinging on the swing...if the door is open, he is outside.

He has cherubic red curls, chubby cheeks and the adorable baby belly that leads him in all his adventures. He loves to help--unloading the dishwasher (dirty or clean, makes no difference to him!), sorting (or un-sorting) laundry, cleaning up his toys, and helping his older siblings learn patience and have joy.

He isn't crazy about many foods, but loves beans, macaroni, bananas, bread, quesadillas and water. We stopped nursing a month or so ago, and is just now beginning to like to drink cow's milk.

He signs his favorite things: bath, more, eat, water, bird, cat, help, hot, blanky and goodbye. He says, "HI!!!!", "uh-oh", "Da-da" and "ow". The "HI!!!!" is the best, because he comes running across the room with a huge grin and his arms open wide. Makes you feel like a million bucks.

His bedtime routine includes being thrown around on the couch and wrestling with Daddy. After that he goes right to sleep after a bedtime song. It's kind of funny.

He brings so much happiness into our home, by simply being his sweet, mischievous self.

Self-Righteousness

Sometimes I realize things slowly. Sometimes I'm shown the obviousness of my mistakes in rapid succession. This last while it's been the latter. I'll share three examples...

#1: I went in to change Lincoln's diaper, and saw a poopy diaper sitting on Sammy's bed (which is right next to the changing table--poor Sambo!), and last night's pajamas on the changing table. Sigh. Stephen got Lincoln dressed that morning. I was kind of annoyed. It's not that hard to swish out the poop--and the laundry basket is literally 1 step away from the changing table. I fully intended to be the martyr and clean everything up, because I am such a sacrificing person...then I noticed yesterday's dirty clothes on the changing table...and a poopy diaper from yesterday in the hall...um...those were my responsibilities. And I had perfectly good reasons for not getting either of those things done.

#2: When the kids came in from playing the other day they took off their shoes (like they are supposed to) and their socks (because they were wet). They left their dirty socks literally in the middle of the kitchen floor. I kicked them (the socks) around for a while, until in frustration I was about to holler at the kids to get-their-stinky-socks-out-of-my-kitchen-5-minutes-ago!!!!! And then I noticed my dirty socks shoved under the table.

#3: I don't know what it is about my kids, but they have a really difficult time finding a laundry basket to put their dirty clothes in. I find dirty clothes wherever they are shed--the front room, the kitchen, their bedrooms, but especially in the bathroom. I wish we had room for a hamper in there, but I'm not convinced it would really do much good. Anyhow, sometimes I purposefully leave their clothes in on the floor just to see if they will notice and pick them up. They have yet to actually do that, but I keep hoping that one day they'll notice. Again, I had been kicking the clothes around in the bathroom for several days when I'd finally had it. Why couldn't they just pick up their own dirty clothes????? Again, I was about to holler at them to CLEAN UP when I noticed, right on the ground next to their clothes, my dirty clothes.

Sigh. Just when I think I might be closer to reaching perfection in little, everyday things, I'm reminded that I have a looooooong way to go yet.

Public blog!

Some genius friends of mine figured out how to make it so people can follow a private blog using Google Reader! Hooray! I'll put a link to every new entry on my public blog so you can follow more easily. :o)

Here's the new address: get-there-together-public.blogspot.com

The light bulb

Tonight, while skyping with family, I overheard the following conversation...

Uncle Dan: Mason, what do you like to do?

Mason: Invent.

UD: What was the last thing you invented?

M: Well, it didn't work.

UD: You know Thomas Edison tried a thousand times before he got the lightbulb right?

M: I already have a lightbulb.

Baby name ideas

In case you  missed it, I'm expecting baby #5 in late October. We're having an ultrasound on May 25th, and the kids have been thinking about baby names. Mason claims that we are going to vote on a name...I told him that's not going to happen! Here are the names in consideration:

GIRL

Mason, in all seriousness: Crystal or Diamond or Ruby or Jewell, but probably not 'Pumpkin Pie'.
Elise's top contenders: Cristell, Lucy, Katiy, Emaelley, Elaine, Josey, Kaliae (pronounced 'Kaelah'), Diamond, Christy. (From a list she wrote this morning.)
Sammy: Julia
Stephen: Cosette, Britta (both of those names are carry-overs since Elise was named)
Me: Not telling!

BOY

Elise (again, from her list): Mason, Samull, Lincoln, Danull, Charels (I think she should get major props for her phonetic spelling)
Mason: Mason, Sammy, Lincoln, Owen, Charles
Sammy: Daniel, John
Stephen: David
Me: Not telling!

The general consensus was that it can't be a food name, because then the kids would get hungry at church. So 'Chocolate Chip' (a Sammy contribution) is right out.
