So I'm training for a half marathon right now - the Helvatia Half, also known as the "Hilly Half". I ran it almost 3 years ago - before Sammy was born - all by myself (with the exception of all the other runners that ran it...my friends all opted for the "Flat Half"). However, this year most of my friends are going to run it, and I am very excited! My only setback has been that my left knee has been giving me some trouble, but I'm hoping with the rest (meaning swimming instead of running) I'm giving it I'll be okay. If anyone has any knee tips, feel free to chime in!
It's funny because I used to think that getting up before 7:30 a.m. was really early. Now my only time to myself is before 7 a.m.! How times have changed - or, more appropriately - how I have changed! Now I swim at 5:30 a.m. and run at 6 a.m. (not the same day, of course). And, I should add, am exhausted most days...
This is really boring. I need to go to bed so that I can get up and go swimming. Goodnight!

Wow...i wanted to say more but that's all that is coming to mind. :) It's making me think that it's time to stop using Aaron as an excuse and get my backside back into gear! Good luck, and post pics!
Well...you have an EXCELLENT excuse - I don't expect much from myself (in the way of exercise) until my babies are a year old. If I do anything before that, hooray for me! If not, I don't feel bad...getting up during the night, nursing, lack of sleep, chasing 2 other babies...and did I mention lack of sleep? :o)
p.s. I don't know how to post pics...help?
when you make a post there should be a button that lets you attach pictures. It looks like a tiny photo.
As for the excuse, if I let myself not do anything for a year, i think I would go crazy. I
claire, where do you go to swim? what kind of workout do you do?
I go to one of the local rec centers. Workout? Should I have something to do? Help?
I do 100m of the crawl stroke, 50-100m kicking, 100m just arms (I like that), sometimes with hand paddles and usually without. Sometimes I try going on my back, but I tend to wander all over the pool, so I don't do that unless there aren't many people around. I rest by doing the breast stroke and taking time at the wall - I can go about 100m at one time in the beginning, and then only 50m towards the end. I'm learning to breathe every 3 strokes - I have a tough time breathing on my left; I still gulp water sometimes. :P I wish you were around to help me!!! I swim for 45 minutes, alternating things, and go home exhausted but happy. :o)
Right now the pool length is 25 meters (or 30?), but will soon be going to "long", which I think is 50m. That's just from one wall to the next - don't swimmers usually consider one length all the way back to the beginning wall? So much I don't know!
haha, what swimmers usually consider a lap is down and back. a length is just one way. If you want to build endurance you should thrown in a pyramid workout in a couple times a week a pyramid workout is when you start with a short length and work your way up to a longer one then back down. for example one i would do is
50m swim
15 sec rest
100m swim
30 sec rest
200m swim
30 sec rest
300m swim
30 sec rest
200m swim
30 sec rest
100m swim
... you get the idea
the distances and rest times can be increased or decreased based on your ability and lvl of fitness. don't go over 1 min rest, if you struggle to go over 100m, i would start with a 25m work your way up to 150 and then back down. As soon as 150 feels comfortable, bump your top end up to 200.
To help with breathing: when you breath, don't turn your head, turn your shoulders. when you swim your shoulders should rotate from side to side in the water. The arm that is underwater, should be under your body and the shoulder that is out of the water should be almost perpendicular to the water. If you are rotating enough, you should barely have to turn you head to breath, just keep it in line with your shoulders when they rotate. Doing this the only way you will get a mouthfull of water is if you are unfortunate enough to breath right when someone is making waves next to you. Any more questions?
speaking of exercise, i went out running last night with a friend from the ward....i hurt :(
