Funny thing

Just yesterday I read in my cousin's blog about how she hates fundraisers, and I commented on how I do, too. Guess what? Today I found out that since Elise is going to be in the Nutracker this December, she has to sell at least 12 raffle tickets by the end of the month. I figured I'd do what my cousin did--buy them all myself--until I saw the price tag: $5/each. OUCH. Guess I'm going to have to send my children begging for money. Or maybe I'll choke up the cash. I despise fundraisers!!

Oh man. I'd buy a couple from you, but I live far away.

Is there anyone who really likes fundraisers? If there is, I've got some coupon books to sell this week!

I feel your pain. Dylan came home with a whole packet full of fundraising catalogs and a letter from the PTA on how much they expected each family to sell/purchase. We're trying to find a few things as Christmas presents but there is NO WAY I'm spending $12 for a 6 oz. pack of chocolates!

Because taxing us for public schooling doesn't give the schools enough money...

I consider these kinds of fundraisers to be child exploitation. I especially hate the ones where they want the kids to go around selling worthless junk at ridiculous prices. I hate that there are whole businesses built on this model of making a killing while being disguised as a way of helping the school. I much prefer it when schools just ask for cash donations. At least that way I know that all of my money is going to the right place!

Amen, Natalie! I feel like I'm prostituting my children...

I hate it too. There has got to be a better way.

Our school does both - it asks for a cash donation of $200/child...which I hear is a great deal, as other schools in the city ask for anywhere from $1,500 and up. Some of the programs these schools have are a bit over the top....then again budget cuts are all over so fundraising seems to take a bigger role. If all the money were to actually come to the schools - that would be one thing, but somehow it gets caught up in the higher levels of these districts. Not so good :(

Then, we have a fundraiser like Natalie described above...which I threw the book out because I so dislike my kiddos doing this. Funny thing - I remember selling things like this as a child and loving it! I was so strange :)

Good luck to Elise and her performance...and selling the tickets. If we lived close we would come - $5 sounds like a great deal for an off-Broadway show :) She'll be able to use her charm and talent to sell those tickets - they'll be gone before you know it!

I heard of the best fundraiser ever last year at the kids' school. Walk-a-thon! Pledge dollars for laps that your kids do at one time during school one day! I thought it was the "fundraiser" I have ever participated in!
